A strong start by the Vernon Vipers was trumped by an even better finish by the Powell River Kings Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.
The Kings overcame an early two-goal deficit, exploding for seven unanswered goals as they overpowered the Vipers 7-2 in B.C. Hockey League action.
Vernon enters the Christmas break second in the Interior Division at 20-10-3-4. The 24-7-2-2 Kings wrap up their pre-holiday schedule with a matinee against the 18-12-1-5 Salmon Arm SilverBacks today at the Shaw Centre.
Liam Coughlin and Ryan Renz recorded goals three minutes apart to give the Snakes the early lead. Stephen Hiff responded with the first of three Powell River powerplay goals with 1:03 to play in the period.
Singles by JJ Colshaw, Luke Nogard, Kurt Keats and Vernon product Jordan Burns gave the Kings a hefty lead after 40 minutes.
Keats and Jarryd Leung capped the scoring in front of Jonah Imoo (21 saves) in the final frame.
Austin Smith allowed five goals on 18 shots before giving way to Danny Todosychuk, who gave up a pair on a dozen shots.
Vernon opens the New Year against the host Trail Smoke Eaters on Friday, Jan. 3 at Cominco Arena.
