Vees beat Vipers in first game of BCHL playoffs

by Kristi Patton - Penticton Western News

Vees, Vipers and vendettas.

There is a lot of stories to tell within that alliteration but only one thing mattered in the first game of the first round of the BCHL playoffs — victory.

And for the Penticton Vees, it was their night to set a tone they hope will carry through the rest of the series with the Vernon Vipers after a 6-3 win on Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

"We knew they were going to come out hard and we came out with the right intensity, mindset and they started losing it once we got a couple of goals," said Vees forward Scott Conway. "I have a feeling they are going to keep doing that."

Can't stay away from that bad blood when these two teams talk about one another. Perhaps it is because they have faced off in the post-season the past three years in a row. The most recent two playoff clashes between the long-time rivals have gone a full seven games. With so much familiarity between the Vipers and Vees, discipline was bound to come up in their first playoff game.

Right off the hop the Vees Dante Fabbro took a misconduct for a hit to the head. The only thing clicking for the Vipers on this night seemed to be the undisciplined play of the Vees leading to two powerplay goals. Liam Finlay gave the Vipers a short-lived 1-0 lead in the first period and midway through the game Odeen Tufto knocked the puck past Vees netminder Anthony Brodeur on the powerplay. The Vipers third goal came thanks to a deflection off a Vees skate, which was credited to Finlay.

The bad blood was punctuated by a bang up start to the second period when the Vipers Riley Brandt and Colton McCarthy tag teamed Vees player Dixon Bowen in the corner slamming him into the boards causing the glass to fall out.

The Vees weren't the only guilty party taking unnecessary penalties. The Vipers were called for spearing and slashing among their six trips to the penalty box. That led to extra-curricular activity by both teams after the whistle late in the third period.

"That is always our goal, playing that physical role. That is our team and we will do that on Sunday too," said Brandt. "Our emotions just got the better of us tonight."

The Vees beat the Vipers in all six of their regular season matchups, including shutting out their north Okanagan rival twice and finishing 50 points ahead in the standings. Playing a big role in that was the Vees Conway who proved again to be the snake charmer netting two goals in the 6-3 win. He led the Vees with 17 points against the Vipers in the regular season series and said his team worked the Vipers down low in Game 1 wearing down their defence which created chances.

"We are not worried about Conway," said Brandt. "Everybody is equal over there. Every one of them is our worst enemy. It doesn't matter if it is Conway. It doesn't matter if it is (Tyson) Jost. We are going to come out hard on every single person out there."

Conway, Jost and Taylor Ward scored all before the end of the first to give the Vees a 3-1 lead. Before they could even announce the Vees fourth goal, Conway's second of the night, Owen Sillinger put another puck in the back of the net. Nic Jones scored the final goal for the Vees in third period.

Vipers netminder Andrew Shortridge was singlehandedly trying to resurrect his team late in the second period. He made five consecutive saves before his team could get the puck out of their end. Shortridge then made a sensational pad save on a breakaway in the third period.

"Our goalie has been rock solid for us all year. They have a good team over there. They scored some good goals and have good goal scorers so it is tough for him but next game he will come out and stand on his head," promised Brandt.

The Vees and Vipers will clash again on Sunday, March 6 6 p.m. at the SOEC. Games 3 and 4 will be played in Vernon on March 8 and 9.

For anyone who could not attend or watch tonight’s Vipers game here are my thoughts and views from tonight’s game. You may agree or disagree but we all have our own view and opinion on any game we watch. This is my opinion and my thoughts on how I saw tonight’s game. I try to be unbiased and give a fare recap on both sides. Thanks for stopping by & visiting my blog.

I was at tonight's Interior Division Semi-Finals Game 2 as Penticton defeated Vernon 3-2 in front of 1,883 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Andrew Shortridge
Penticton: Zach Driscoll

1st Period: Just nineteen seconds into Game 2 Riley Brandt gets called for charging after laying out a big hit behind the Vees net giving Penticton an early powerplay to start the game. Andrew Shortridge had to be alert early after a quick low shot from the point was deflected on it's way to the net, forced Shortridge into making a big save. The Vees kept pressing before Nick Jones shot was tipped in front by Scott Conway giving Penticton an early 1-0 lead at 1:29 Jones and Easton Brodzinski collected the helpers. The Vipers needed close to three minutes to record their first shot of the period, before getting an early PP of their own less then four minutes into the opening frame. Vernon struggled with the man advantage couldn't get any kind of zone time. The Vees with a good PK used a good strong forecheck to keep the Vipers hemmed in the neutral zone. Vernon without a shot on the powerplay would get three in the dying seconds, one off the stick of Viper captain Colton McCarthy who had a good quality chance in tight, couldn't beat Zach Driscoll as Penticton was able to kill off the minor. The Vipers would jump right back on the powerplay thirty five seconds later. Vernon again struggled with the PP this time around was hemmed deep in their own end, Scott Conway and Nick Jones with a solid forecheck, kept the puck along the boards battling off three Vipers. Conway with a strong penalty kill, ended up loose out front was denied by Andrew Shortridge who was forced into making a big save shorthanded. The Vipers without a single shot on the man advantage, after Penticton with a strong forecheck-penalty kill would kill off the penalty. A few minutes later Odeen Tufto looked to have a great opportunity at an open cage, couldn't get the puck into the back of the net on the wrap around at the ten minute mark. On the same play-shift, back come the Vees, Griffin Mendel carried the play up ice, before breaking free wired a quick shot from the circle was stopped by Shortridge who come up with a big pad save. Two good opportunities at both ends of the rink. The Vees would get their second man advantage just past the midway mark after Vernon would get caught with too many men on the ice. Scott Conway with his second of the night and second on the PP gave Penticton a 2-0 lead at 12:24 Nick Jones with the lone assist. The Vipers would respond and get on the board five minutes later. The Vipers with a strong forecheck down low, allowed Brett Stapley to setup former West Kelowna Warriors forward Hunter Zandee in the slot who beat Driscoll cutting the Penticton lead to 2-1 at 17:22 Stapley with the lone helper. Off the following faceoff the Vees come very close to re-taking their two goal lead after Nick Jones walked in down the left wing, ripped a lazer of a shot, that beat Andrew Shortridge but not the crossbar on a close call. Penticton with a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play. The Vees jump out to an early lead on the powerplay as the first half was basically all specialty teams. The Vipers and Vees exchanged powerplays that lasted for most of the first half. Penticton would grab a 2-0 lead on another powerplay goal, before the Vipers responded late to get within a goal. The Vees had a slight edge in play, but overall Vernon held their own, were only down a goal heading to the 2nd period. The Vipers had troubles getting pucks to the net, didn't get a lot of scoring chances. Penticton's defence was very good, blocked a lot of Viper shots, kept Vernon to the outside. Specialty teams were the difference, as the Vees go 2-2 with the man advantage while the Vipers go 0-2. The Vees penalty kill was very strong. A very vocal crowd at the SOEC, were really giving it to the referee's through out the 1st. Viper captain Colton McCarthy was heckled anytime he was on the ice, as Vees fans were jumping on the second year Viper any opportunity they could. Penticton outshot Vernon 17-6.

2nd Period: The Vees got off to a good start, had the early edge in play. Penticton would get an early powerplay, getting some real good looks at the net from in close. A few deflections in front didn't miss the net by much as the Vees were pressing couldn't capitalize as Vernon was able to kill off the penalty. Owen Sillinger going to the net, couldn't get a good enough of a shot off from in close with two Vipers wrapped around him on a good chance from in tight was kicked out by Andrew Shortridge. Vernon didn't get off to a great start, needed seven and a half minutes to record their first shot of the second period. The Vees seemed to be firing from everywhere, were missing the net often, had troubles hitting the net. Penticton with a strong forecheck early, were winning the battles along the boards. At the midway mark the Vipers couldn't clear the zone, wich allowed Mitch Brooks to spot Nick Jones in the high slot, where his backhand beat Vipers starting goaltender Andrew Shortridge giving Penticton a 3-1 lead at 10:08 Brooks and Luke Voltin picked up the assists. The Vipers seemed to slowly get their game going in the second half and played-looked much better. Vernon with a few scrambles in front of the net, forced Vees starting goaltender Zach Driscoll to make a few tough saves with traffic in and around the blue paint. Just past the halfway mark a Viper player fell into Driscoll, forcing a scrum in front of the Penticton crease, with lots of pushing and shoving going on, before the minor scrum was broken up. With seven and a half minutes remaining, Ben Butcher ripped a quick shot off the right wing, was denied by Driscoll before making a huge pad save off Liam Finlay going to the net in front, two great opportunities by the Vipers couldn't beat the Vees netminder who made his two biggest saves of the night. Former Viper forward Luke Voltin one on one couldn't beat Andrew Shortridge from the slot, after a quick glove save kept this game 3-1. It stayed 3-1 Penticton after 40 minutes of play. The Vees were the better team early and through out most of the first eight to ten minutes but the Vipers responded and turned things around in the second half with a much better performance. Both teams were fairly evenly matched in the second half. For a second straight period, the fans were all over the referees for missing calls and again jumping on Colton McCarthy. Vernon outshot Penticton 11-9.

3rd Period: Early into the final frame Andrew Shortridge and Mitch Brooks got tangled up in the Vernon crease. Brooks bumped into Shortridge who then took a swing at Brooks as the two picked up minors. Both teams were fairly even as the play was back and fourth with not a lot of chances. Callum Volpe with a quick shot from just inside the blueline forced Zach Driscoll to make a quick reaction save, making the pad save off the Viper defenceman. Shortly after while four on four Mitchell Oliver's shot was mishandled by Driscoll before Odeen Tufto buried the rebound cutting the Penticton lead to 3-2 at 8:17 Oliver & Bo Pellah with the assists. This goal gave the Vipers some momentum wich carried on through for most of the period. Vernon slowly started to get rolling and looked to have the Vees back on their heels a bit. Penticton got away from the forecheck, were stepping back, playing more of a defensive game while the Vipers were coming on late, carried most of the play. Vernon with not a lot of pressure, were kept to the outside, limited on their scoring chances. The Vipers were moving the puck well, got some good looks at the net, couldn't get one past Zach Driscoll who had to come up with a few saves in the 3rd. With seven minutes remaining Mac Ferner turned over the puck, wich allowed Luke Voltin to go in for the parcial breakaway was stoned by Andrew Shortridge who had to make his biggest save of the period, keeping this a one goal game. Penticton tightened up defensively and with five minutes to go, really shut down the Viper attack. Vernon now carrying the better of the play, couldn't seem to get pucks to the net, were boxed to the outside, as the Vees come up with some big shot blocks late in the period. late in the period David Eccles was seen making his way down the tunnel to the Penticton dressing room. (I didn't see if he returned) Mark Ferner would call a late timeout before getting Andrew Shortridge to the bench for the extra attacker with 2:09 remaining. The Vees had atleast three or four cracks at the open cage, couldn't put the game away, missing on several shots from the neutral zone. Vernon would get the play deep inside the Vees zone and with a minute remaining get all kinds of pressure down low, moving the puck around the Vipers were unable to get pucks through the maze of defenders in front. With time winding down and inside twenty five seconds Jimmy Lambert looked to have a shot at the wide open net, somehow couldn't tie the game late, the Vipers would get one last crack for a final shot would end up running out of time as the buzzer sounded. Dante Fabbro was down on the ice at the final buzzer (I didn't see what happened) but needed some help off the ice, as Penticton held on for the 3-2 victory and now hold a 2-0 series lead, heading to Vernon for Games 3 & 4 Tuesday-Wednesday. The Vipers with one of their strongest periods of this series, emptied the tank come very close to forcing overtime. Odeen Tufto's goal would get the Vipers to within a goal but that's as close as Vernon would come. I thought Vernon was the better team, carried most of the play, had the Vees back on their heels, especially in the second half. The Vipers didn't get a lot of opportunities, were held to the outside, didn't have a lot of shooting lanes-had troubles getting pucks to the net. Penticton looked to play a more defensive game in the 3rd, laid back got away from the attack-forecheck. Give credit to the Vees defence who did a heck of a job at shutting down the Vipers offence, closed the shooting lanes, blocked shots, limited the Vipers time and space, got some big saves from Zach Driscoll. Penticton outshot Vernon 13-7.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

Colton McCarthy played the villain role tonight. The Viper captain had the crowd all over him through out the contest. Anytime the Viper forward was on the ice, fans at the SOEC were really giving it to him. McCarthy played with an edge, was going to the net, battling, getting under the skin of several Vees players, with little jabs-shots after the whistle. Really mucked it up, worked and played hard. Played with an edge but didn't cross it, by taking undisciplined penalties.

Odeen Tufto (1 goal) I didn't think Tufto had a very good game Friday in the loss after Game 1. The Vipers regular season leading scorer has to be better then Game 1 and I thought really stepped up his play in the 2nd and 3rd periods tonight. Was skating hard, really battled-competed, played with lots of jump & energy in his game, tried creating-generating chances.

Hunter Zandee (1 goal) I thought had a very strong game up front, played hard, worked, battled and competed all night, had lots of jump and energy, played well at both ends of the rink.

Liam Finlay was another forward who had lots of jump, was skating hard, really moved-carried the puck up ice in a hurry tonight. Didn't get in on the score sheet but played very well.

Andrew Shortridge (36 saves) After allowing three soft goals in Game 1, Shortridge responded tonight with a back bounce game-performance. Couldn't be faulted on any of the Vees three goals this evening, made some big saves through out tonight's loss to give his team a chance to win.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

After a 6-3 loss in Game 1 the Vipers responded with one of their better games in a while, atleast a game that I saw them play in. Vernon come ready to play tonight, played as close to sixty minutes as they have vs Penticton all season, come up just short in Game 2. Overall I thought the Vipers held their own against the Vees for most of the game and really stepped up their play in the 3rd with a solid period. The Vipers played physical, didn't give up as many chances tonight, compared to Game 1 and played with a more balanced attack tonight. I thought Vernon struggled with the man advantage, going 0-3 unlike Game 1 where they went 2-2. The Vipers just couldn't get much going on the powerplay. I thought Vernon's breakout was much better tonight, played better defensively and got the goaltending they needed if they wanted a chance to win tonight. I thought the Vipers did a better job of containing a few of Penticton's super stars. The Vipers emtied the tanks in the 3rd, had some close chances down low-in front just couldn't get the game tying goal. None closer then Jimmy Lambert in the dying twenty-twenty five seconds, somehow missed the open cage at the side of the net. Specialty teams were the difference, and especially in the 1st period. The Vees go 2-2 while Vernon goes 0-2. The Vipers still have to try and find a way to get more pucks to the net, had troubles getting shots-pucks by the Penticton defence. Like Game 1 a very few amount of Viper fans at the game. Very disappointing turnout. The Vipers are sporting their new haircuts-bleached hair for the playoffs. Vipers down 0-2 in the series are in a must win situation come Game 3 if they want to stay in this series. The Vipers have now lost eight straight to the Vees this season and haven't won in Penticton since Game 6 of last year's playoffs.

Top Player's: (Penticton)

Nick Jones (1 goal & 2 assists) Played very well in Game 1 had another solid performance tonight in Game 2. Jones with three points in the win, was one of the better Vees forwards. Was strong on the forecheck-penalty kill, had a chance to give Penticton a 3-1 lead in the 1st period, rang his shot off the crossbar.

Scott Conway (2 goals) For a second straight game Conway picks up two goals in the victory, now has twenty one points in eight games vs Vernon this year. Conway didn't have the same amount of time and space to free wheel like he did in Game 1, was limited to his open ice, scored two powerplay goals in the opening frame, was also good on the PK.

Luke Voltin (1 assist) The Former Langley Rivermen-Vernon Viper showed lots of energy-jump, going to the net, had two grade A chances couldn't solve Andrew Shortridge. I thought looked very good for the Vees tonight.

David Eccles had a solid night on the blueline, was blocking shots, played well defensively went to the Vees dressing room late in the 3rd (I didn't see if he returned) had a strong night in the win.

Dante Fabbro Had another strong night on the Penticton backend. Didn't record any points but was shutdown defensively, really moves the puck well out of his own end, smooth skater, really sees and reads the ice well. Always gets pucks to the net, calm with and without the puck. Went down at the final buzzer (I didn't see what happened) but was slow to get up after the game ended.

Griffin Mendel Was another Vees defender that played very well on the blueline. Jumped up into the play on occasions, moves the puck well, good skater.

Zach Driscoll (22 saves) Improves to 3-0 vs the Vipers this season, shutout Vernon in his previous two regular season games vs the Vipers. Didn't see much rubber-action in the opening frame, made some key saves in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Very quick on his feet, likes to move around a lot.

Game Thought's: (Penticton)

The Vees with a big powerplay goal early, jumped out to a 2-0 lead before getting that all important third goal midway through the 2nd period, wich proved to be the game winner. I didn't think Penticton was as strong compared to Game 1. Tonight both teams were a lot more evenly matched, both teams worked hard, battled and competed but at the end of the day, the Vees come away with a big win to grab a 2-0 series lead heading to Vernon for Games 3 & 4. Penticton's powerplay went 2-4 was clicking in that 1st period, that went 2-2. The Vees with a strong penalty kill, also looked good on the forecheck especially in the first two periods. I didn't think the Vees super stars were given as much time and space-open ice like in Game 1 had to battled-work a little extra for that time and space tonight. For a second straight game the Vees defence was solid, block a lot of shots, close the shooting lanes, really limit the Vipers opportunities and keep Vernon's offensive players to the outside. Especially in the last five minutes of the game. Both teams got away with the usual chippy play now and again. A hard fought playoff game by both teams with good goaltending at both ends of the rink. The Vees improve to 8-0 vs the Vipers this season are 5-0 at home vs Vernon this year. A smaller crowd after Fridays crowd was close to 2,400. The Vees took the first two games in last year's playoff matchup before losing the next three games but ended up winning Games 6 & 7 to win the series.

I was at tonight's Game 3 of the Interior Division Semi-Finals as Vernon defeated Penticton 2-1 at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Andrew Shortridge
Penticton: Anthony Brodeur

1st Period: The Vees got off to a quick start as Scott Conway with two good quality chances early. In the opening two minutes "AP" Carter Stephenson lost an edge, allowing Conway open ice to break in for the parcial breakaway couldn't beat Andrew Shortridge in close and just a few plays later Conway with a great individual effort beat Shortridge but hit the far post as the goal light come on and the play continued. On the play the Vees would get the games first powerplay. A short lived PP as Penticton would take a penalty of their own sending both teams to four on four before the Vipers would get a very shortened powerplay. The Vees would kill off the minor as both teams went back to five on five. The Vees jumped out to an early lead in the shot department, were outshooting Vernon 5-1 less then four minutes into the game. Both teams looked fairly even in the first ten minutes with not a lot of quality chances at either ends of the rink, other then Scott Conways two opportunities in the opening few minutes. Both teams stepped up the physical play early, laying out some good checks in the first half. Just before the halfway mark Ben Butcher's shot from the blueline would be redirected in front by Liam Finlay who forced Anthony Brodeur to make a tough save in close keeping this game scoreless. Three and a half minutes later Butcher would setup Finlay going to the net but once again Brodeur come up with a big save. Vernon slowly coming on, were getting lots of pucks to the net, seemed to be firing from everywhere as the Vipers took over the edge in play in the last five to six minutes. The Vipers moving the puck well, got some good pressure deep in the offensive zone, had the Vees hemmed in their own end for a solid two minutes or more but were held to the outside, didn't get many chances. With just over a minute remaining in the frame and Vernon getting a powerplay, Andrew Shortridge come out of his crease to play the puck, the puck landed right on a Vees stick, that stopped the play with the upcoming penalty. But the Vees player shot the puck into the open cage forcing a scrum along the side wall as both teams were mixing it up along the boards. After the scrum was broken up Scott Conway with a great opportunity down low, couldn't beat Andrew Shortridge inside the final minute. It was 0-0 after 20 minutes. Penticton with a strong start on the road, had two real good chances within the first few minutes couldn't open the scoring. Both teams looked fairly even in the first half, with the Vipers taking over the edge in play in the second half. Both teams with some quality chances, as both goaltenders played very well. Vernon outshot Penticton 15-9.

2nd Period: The Vees with a strong start, had several chances early inside the opening minute. Taylor Ward with atleast two maybe three cracks at the loose puck in front of the net, couldn't beat Vipers starting goaltender Andrew Shortridge who come up with some big saves early and often this period. Penticton jumped on the Vipers early and often had Vernon hemmed inside their own end, giving the Viper defence all kinds of trouble with a strong forecheck and potent attack. Easton Brodzinski and Owen Sillinger with good looks at the net, missed the net on two missed opportunities. Vees captain Tyson Jost with a quick shot from the high slot, couldn't beat the quick glove of Shortridge who made a big save off the Vees superstar forward. Shortridge was very busy for most of the period as it was all Penticton. A shot from the point was redirected in front by Nick Jones who looked to beat Andrew Shortridge but hit the crossbar as the puck stayed out. The Vees with all kinds of pressure were outshooting Vernon 12-3 just over four minutes into the 2nd period. Just less then five minutes in the Vipers would finally clear the zone, Jagger Williamson with a hard working shift, broke free to wheel in on a two on one attack, Williamson tried setting up former Penticton Vees forward Liam Finlay going to the net, but the puck hit Finlay or someone in front, as the puck went straight up in the air. A few players later a quick shot from the corner forced Vees starting goaltender Anthony Brodeur into coming across the crease to make a difficult save keeping this game scoreless. It was all Penticton in the first half. Early into the second half Jimmy Lambert with a nice stretch pass hit Odeen Tufto for the breakaway who went shortside beat Brodeur blocker side giving Vernon a 1-0 lead at 12:37 Lambert with the lone assist. Less then two minutes later the Vees would get their second and third powerplays of the evening after picking up back to back powerplays. Easton Brodzinski missed the net from a shot from the circle on the first man advantage as Penticton with not a lot of chances. The Vees had some pressure but were missing the net on a few shots. Andrew Shortridge was forced into making a few saves as the Vipers penalty kill was good, killed off both minors. Darren Rizzolo would leave the ice during the second penalty kill after taking a puck in the face off a shot from Scott Conway. Rizzolo would make his way to the dressing room, would return for the start of the 3rd period. Vernon was up 1-0 after 40 minutes of play. The Vees basically dominated the frame from start to finish. It was all Penticton as the Vees with a ton of pressure, had several quality opportunities couldn't beat Andrew Shortridge who was solid for the full twenty minutes. Shortridge was called apon to make several big stops, keeping his team in the game. If it wasn't for Shortridge this period, the Vees could have maybe jumped out to a big lead, heading into the 3rd. The Vipers with very little zone time/any real great chances were only able to get two maybe three quality opportunities of their own. Vernon struggled defensively forced lots of turnovers in that period. Anthony Brodeur wasn't tested much but was letting out some big rebounds that period. Penticton outshot Vernon 25-5.

3rd Period: For a third straight period, Penticton jumped on the Vipers getting a good start off the opening faceoff. Easton Brodzinski with a strong forecheck down low, was knocking guys off pucks like flies and Scott Conway skated through atleast three or four Vipers untouched before being stopped in close by Andrew Shortridge. Shortridge and the Vipers couldn't cover the puck before Conway went around the net before coming out the other side, putting the puck home into the open cage as several Vipers dove into the crease to try and stop the puck, as Penticton tied the game 1-1 at 0:44 Conway with a nice individual effort tied the game, Brodzinski & Dixon Bowen collected the helpers. A huge goal by the Vees inside the opening minute. Penticton looked good in the early few minutes, as Vernon struggled to get out of their own end. The Vipers would slowly pick up their game and come back with some hard shifts of their own. Just before the halfway mark, the Vipers would get just their second powerplay of the night but a strong penalty kill by the Vees, limited Vernon;s time and space as the Vipers struggled to get much of anything going with the man advantage. The Vees would kill off the minor. Just minutes after the PP Mac Ferner's point shot would miss the net, before Jagger Williamson buried the rebound off the back wall, gave Vernon a 2-1 lead at 12:03 Ferner and Bo Pellah picked up the helpers. From here on in, both teams went back and fourth with not a lot of any real great opportunities but lots of end to end rushes. With just over five minutes remaining Griffin Mendel found open ice, was able to walk in untouched before getting a quick low shot off from the circle was denied by Andrew Shortridge, who then had to recover in a hurry to make a big save off Owen Sillinger from the slot. On the same play-shift back come the Vipers on an odd man rush. Odeen Tufto setup Jimmy Lambert going hard to the net on a two on one couldn't beat a sprawling Anthony Brodeur who come across the blue paint to make his biggest save of the evening, keeping this a one goal game. Lambert scores here and this gives Vernon a 3-1 lead with five minutes to go. A few plays later the Vipers on another odd man rush tried going far side again, this time forced Brodeur into once again sprawling post to post to react for the save, looked to be very slot to get up as the play went back the other up ice. Brodeur was bent down in his crease, looked to be holding his groin and in some discomfort. Once the play stopped the referee skated towards the Vees netminder to see if he was ok. Brodeur would stay in the game and looked to shake whatever was wrong with him off. Penticton running out of time, slowly started to take over the edge in play in the final minutes, with the Vees pressing for the game tying goal. Andrew Shortridge had to be sharp, was forced into making atleast two big saves inside the final three minutes. Fred Harbinson and the Vees would call a late timeout, try and get Brodeur to the bench for the extra attacker, with Brodeur making his way to the bench, Jimmy Lambert with a long shot at the open net from centre ice was robbed after Brodeur turned around, made his way back to the crease before diving across the ice to get his stick out to stop the puck at a chance for the open net, making an unreal save to keep this a 2-1 game. Brodeur would eventually make his way to the bench, as the Vees with the extra man poured on the pressure. Brodeur would get looked at by the Vees trainer, before slowly making his way to the dressing room, didn't return to the bench. Vernon's defence held the Vees to the outside, hemmed Penticton's forwards along the end wall, ate a lot of valuable time off the clock, the Vees had two or three looks at the net, were unable to really get any quality chance before the Vipers would clear the zone, with just seconds remaining Mitch Brooks leaned over the Penticton bench to grab the puck just seconds before the final buzzer. As several Vipers skated over, wanting the game winning puck a minor scrum broke loose in front of the Vees bench, with lots of pushing and shoving, both teams were charged up with lots of emotions pouring over. Several Penticton players had to be held back by the coaching staff as tempers heated up at the buzzer. In the end I don't think Vernon did get the game winning puck, as the Vipers would hang on for the 2-1 win and get back in the series. Penticton leads the series 2-1. The Vees with another strong start to a period, come out of the gates early, tied the game inside the first minute after a hard working shift down low and in front. It looked like Penticton had the early momentum took it to the Vipers early, before both teams would settle down and looked fairly even for most of the period. A lot of play going back and fourth, with very few scoring chances at both ends of the rink. It wasn't until Jagger Williamson's game winner where both teams would get some good opportunities late in the period. Both teams worked-played very hard in the final twenty minutes. Penticton outshot Vernon 10-8.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

Mitchell Oliver I thought played fairly well on the Viper blueline. Really moved the puck out of the zone, and up ice well. Has really come on as the season has progressed, looked confident and calm out there tonight.

Bo Pellah (1 assist) Saw a ton of ice time tonight, also played very well on the backend. Pellah who usally coughs up or turns over the puck often, played a good game.

Jagger Williamson (1 goal) Was pretty creative tonight, was skating well, created-generated a few Viper opportunities, scored the game winner off a lucky bounce-break midway through the 3rd period. Played hard, competed all night.

Hunter Zandee who played very well-looked very good in Sunday's Game 2 loss had another solid night tonight. Zandee showing lots of jump-energy in his game tonight, played hard, was skating, really forcing the play, was finishing his checks, was aggressive with and without the puck, on the Vees defence all night.

Liam Finlay who has played well this series, had another strong night this evening. Didn't pick up any points, but had a few chances. Was going to the net a lot, couldn't beat Anthony Brodeur in close.

Steven Jandric was another Viper forward who I thought played with a lot of jump, was aggressive on the attack, finished his checks, battled and played hard through out the game.

Mac Ferner (1 assist) Other then taking a dumb penalty late in the 1st period, played well defensively, made a few big defensive plays to break up a Penticton scoring play.

Andrew Shortridge (43 saves) Had a solid performance between the pipes in the victory. Shortridge picks up his first win vs Penticton in nine games was very strong through out the game. The veteran 20 yr old goaltender made his best saves of the night in the 2nd period, stopping all twenty five Vees shots. Shortridge who has been Vernon's MVP this season, needs to be this good if the Vipers have any chance at defeating the defending league champs.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

The Vipers finally get the monkey off their back, beating the Vees for the first time this season, get their first win at home over Penticton since Game 4 of last years playoff matchup with Penticton. What an exciting game, no matter what team your cheering for. The Vipers played very well for two out of the three periods. Vernon with a very good 1st period, played very well held their own and more in a scoreless 1st. The Vipers were totally outplayed-dominated in that 2nd period, were outshot 25-5 but somehow managed to excape up 1-0 after some solid goaltending by Andrew Shortridge. In the 3rd it didn't look good early with Penticton tying the game just fourty four seconds into the final frame but give Vernon credit, they battled-competed hard, found a way to hang on for their first win over the Vees this season. The Vipers didn't give up a lot of shots or opportunities in the 3rd, were very good defensively. A huge win, in a almost must win situation. Penticton wins tonight and this series is basically over, the Vipers needed to get back in this series tonight, making tomorrow's game that much more important. I liked Vernon's penalty kill, sure they gave up some chances but for the most parts, did a fairly good job.

Top Player's: (Penticton)

Scott Conway (1 goal) Now has twenty two points in just nine games vs the Vipers this year. Conway has dominated the Vipers all season, only managed one goal after getting two great chances inside the first few minutes of the 1st period. I didn't think Conway stood out as much as he did in Games 1 & 2 but was still dangerous in the offensive zone. This kid always seems to find the open ice.

Easton Brodzinski (1 assist) Was a force down low, really used his size-weight and was hard to defend against on the forecheck. I thought had a strong night for the Vees. Had several good looks at the net, missed on a few but still was involved in the play, had some chances.

Taylor Ward had a fairly good night up front for Penticton, had some good chances early to start the 2nd period, played and battled hard through out the game.

Griffin Mendel had another strong night on the Vees blueline. I thought Mendel played very well in Game 2 was also just as good in Game 3.

Anthony Brodeur (26 saves) Suffers his first loss vs the Vipers this season, played very well. Didn't see as much action-rubber as Andrew Shortridge but still come up with the saves when needed. Made his biggest save of the night off Jimmy Lambert in the 3rd period on a Vernon odd man rush. I think this save is when Brodeur first got injured-or injured himself stretching out across the blue paint to make the sprawling save. Let out several rebounds tonight, was quick to recover back into position.

Game Thought's: (Penticton)

After taking the first two games of this series at home, the Vees will return home for a Game 5 Friday. Penticton falls to 8-1 against Vernon this season (Including regular season) just like the Vipers played-battled hard tonight. The Vees didn't get a lot of bounces-puck luck to go there way tonight, had their best opportunities in the 2nd period ran into a hot goaltender. Andrew Shortridge was solid-almost unbeatable made several huge saves keeping the Vees off the scoreboard in the middle frame. If not for the Vipers goaltender, this could have been a different score-outcome. Penticton wasn't clicking on the man advantage, missed the net often especially in that 2nd period, had some good looks but fired wide. The Vees defence was once again solid through out Games 1 & 2 and again tonight doing a great job at blocking shots, keeping Vernon to the outside, limiting the Vipers chances. Penticton outshot Vernon 44-28 but this game was much closer then going by the number of shots. This game could have easily gone either way, was very exciting and entertaining to watch. The referee's let both teams play, put away their whistles at times. A fairly decent turnout of Vees fans (20-25) made the trip to Kal Tire Place.

Vees take 2-0 series lead into Vernon with tight win

by Emanuel Sequeira - Penticton Western News

March 9, 2016

Vernon Vipers coach Mark Ferner is fired up, and it’s not because his team is now trailing its BCHL Interior Division series 2-0 against the Penticton Vees.

Not long after Vees defenceman Dante Fabbro sacrificed his body to block a hard slap shot and secure a 3-2 win at the South Okanagan Events Centre Sunday, Ferner learned that Vees coach Fred Harbinson made unacceptable comments to his player Odeen Tufto. In their dressing room, Ferner asked Tufto what happened.

"He has no reason to lie to me. He told me exactly what was said," said Ferner. "I talked to the chief of officiating after and apparently it was going to get written up in the report.

“I’ve never chirped another player because I’m not in the battle,” said Ferner continued. “When Fred puts up two fingers, to Peter Tufto and says (expletive) you, only two more games left in your series, that’s unacceptable. There’s no room for that. Especially from a guy that’s never played the game.”

Ferner, who plans to leave the situation with the BCHL, added that the Vees’ trainer was also involved. While heading towards their exit to get off the ice, a few of the Viper players, including Mac Ferner, were heated and exchanged words towards the Vees bench, which primarily had a trainer and an assistant coach.

"I was off the bench right after the horn went," said Harbinson. "Maybe he was talking about Nick (Fuher, assistant coach). Mark wants to focus on the wrong things, let him focus on the wrong things."

When asked about the situation, Vees forward Nicholas Jones said he didn’t see what happened, but said emotions were high.

When it came to the action on the ice, the Vees didn’t need much time to strike first. The home side drew a penalty when Riley Brandt took a charging penalty for crunching Dixon Bowen behind the Vees goal. Just over a minute into the power play, Scott Conway cashed in on a loose puck after Vipers goalie Andrew Shortridge made a save. With no Viper in sight to clear the puck, Conway deposited his third of the playoffs into the gaping cage. Then with less than eight minutes remaining in the period, Conway was credited with his second of the night when a shot from Jones from the point was redirected, though it appeared that it was Tyson Jost who scored. Jost was given an assist on the play.

The Vipers cut into that lead when Brett Stapley found Hunter Zandee by himself in the slot. Zandee one-timed the shot past Zach Driscoll and the Vees headed into the dressing room leading 2-1.

Only one goal was scored in the second and that was by Jones. Jones was able to lift a backhand in the low slot area past Shortridge’s blocker side with a couple of Vipers piled on him.

“It was a good forecheck by Mitch Brooks there,” said Jones. “The puck popped out and I was able to get a quick shot off.”

In the final period, during four-on-four action, Tufto was able to free himself from a Vees defender at the side of the net to swat a puck past Driscoll, who wasn’t in position to make the save at 8:17.

“I thought our compete level got better. We’ve asked our kids to play with some more passion, some more urgency,” said Ferner. “Later in the game I thought we did do that. We had some real good looks, they didn’t go in.”

With the goalie pulled for the extra attacker in the final minute, the Vees withstood the Vipers pressure. The Vees covered lanes and received a couple of key blocked shots from Jones and Fabbro.

"I thought we did a good job of keeping them to the outside," said Harbinson. "We did a good job of blocking shots. We played desperate around the net, which you have to. We kept them under 10 shots every period. If we continue to do that, it's going to make it real tough for them to get wins."

Jones said getting the win was huge.

“We knew they were going to be desperate tonight,” said Jones. “They came out and gave us all we had in the third period. They really came out firing. It was a great team win.”

While the Vees struck twice on four power plays, their penalty kill was on its game, going three-for-three. Shortridge finished with 36 saves, while Driscoll turned aside 22.

Attendance was 1,883.

The series now switches over to Vernon for Game 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday.

I was at tonight's Game 4 of the Interior Division Semi-Finals as Penticton defeated Vernon 6-2 at Kal Tire Place.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Andrew Shortridge
Penticton: Zach Driscoll

1st Period: The Vipers would get the games first powerplay, less then three minutes into the opening period. Mitchell Oliver couldn't control the bouncing puck, before Scott Conway broke free, would come in one on one before getting a parcial breakaway couldn't beat Andrew Shortridge shorthanded, who come up with a big save early. Vernon struggled with the man advantage and would register just one shot late on the PP. Ben Butcher's hard shot along the ice, forced Zach Driscoll into kicking out the right pad-leg made a big pad save as the Vees were able to kill off the minor. Penticton carried the early edge, were firing pucks on goal early and often were outshooting the Vipers 6-1 at one point less then five minutes into the game. Vernon was having all kinds of trouble breaking out of their own end, as well as going through the neutral zone, as the Vipers with several soft-poor passes, were turning over the puck often early in the opening frame. As the period continued both teams looked fairly even with not a lot of scoring chances at both ends of the rink. Penticton was getting their fare shots on goal, while Vernon struggled getting pucks to the net through out the period. The Vees would open the scoring just past the halfway mark. Dante Fabbro would be denied by Shortridge, the Vipers couldn't clear the front of the net, wich allowed Scott Conway to bury the loose puck in the crease, giving Penticton a 1-0 lead at 10:21 Fabbro and Tyson Jost collected the helpers. Shortly after Hunter Zandee with a hard working shift, stepped over the blueline, ripped a low shot that was stopped by Zach Driscoll who once again made another big pad save. On the following play Vernon would jump on their second powerplay. Odeen Tufto with a brutal pass, turned the puck over inside the neutral zone allowed Nick Jones to go in alone for the breakaway, beat Shortridge to give Penticton a 2-0 lead at 12:28 Jones goal was unassisted. Jones goal-shot wasn't registered on the shot clock, as the Vees still had nine shots on the shot clock. The Vipers struggled with PP were hemmed inside their own blueline, as the Vees with a strong forecheck had the Vipers back on their heels. In the dying seconds of the powerplay, Mac Ferner fell at the blueline wich allowed Owen Sillinger to walk in alone for the shorthanded breakaway, Sillinger beat Andrew Shortridge just as the penalty expired giving Penticton a 3-0 lead at 14:12 Sillinger's goal was unassisted. For a second straight goal, the Vees goal-shot was put up on the shot clock, as the Vees still sitting at nine shots, when it should have read eleven. Vernon didn't record a single shot were now 0-2 with the man advantage. Mark Ferner would call a timeout to try and rally the troops. Just a minute later Penticton would get their first look with the powerplay, but the Vees didn't generate much as the Vipers come up with a big penalty kill, would kill off the minor. The Vipers with just one shot the entire period, didn't get their second shot until very late in the frame. Penticton was up 3-0 after 20 minutes of play. The Vipers didn't look very sharp, didn't have that intensity-emotion that played with in last night's win, showed no real signs of jump or energy looked flat, made several poor-soft passes, had all kinds of troubles coming out of their own end and breaking through the neutral zone, turned over the puck way too many times. Vernon struggled with the man advantage, went 0-2 with the PP had just one shot on two powerplays. Penticton was getting lots of pucks to the net, didn't get a lot of scoring opportunities, capitalized on their chances. Yes the Vees outshot Vernon but in no way was that the way the game was going, the game was even at times with the Vipers basically gift wrapping two goals. If the Vipers don't give up the two breakaway goals, this is a 1-0 hockey game after the 1st period. The Vees defence was very good, really took away the shooting lanes, limited Vernon's chances. Penticton outshot Vernon 13-2.

2nd Period: The Vees waisted very little time to jump on Vernon early. The Viper defence had troubles getting out of their own end, were hemmed inside their own zone before Scott Conway setup Easton Brodzinski who gave Penticton a 4-0 lead at 0:54 Conway & Nick Jones with the assists. Vernon would get one back, finally getting on the scoreboard. Nic Rasovic setup Steven Jandric for the breakaway who beat Vees starting goaltender Zach Driscoll cutting the Penticton lead to 4-1 at 4:12 Rasovic and Bo Pellah picked up the helpers. This was the Vipers first shot of the period and just their third shot of the evening. Just over two minutes later the Vipers would get their third powerplay of the night, but for a second time tonight, the Vees would score shorthanded. A long dump in play from centre had the puck ring around the boards, Vipers starting goaltender Andrew Shortridge come out to play the puck, that took a weird bounce off the end glass-boards, come right out front to a wide open Nick Jones who hit the open cage, giving Penticton a 5-1 lead at 6:57 Jones second of the game, was unassisted. This gave the Vees fans a good opportunity to start the chant "Go Vees Go" Go Vees Go" echoing through out Kal Tire Place. The Vees would get called for a second penalty, giving Vernon a short two man advantage. The Vipers passing the puck around, waisted more time off the clock, got just a few shots towards the net, as Penticton with a good defensive penalty kill, would kill off both minors. A penalty filled 2nd period with both teams switching turns in the penalty box. It seemed like every few minutes one team was either shorthanded or the other team on the powerplay. Vernon struggled with the man advantage, didn't generate or create many opportunities. The Vipers moved the puck around and around and around, had very limited shots. The Vees defence was once again solid, clogging up the middle, keeping the Vipers to the outside, took away the shooting lanes, didn't give the Vipers any space to shoot. The Vipers would go 0-4 with the powerplay this period. The Vees would get two powerplays of their own but struggle at times too, missing the net, didn't generate much for offensive chances. Penticton was 0-2 with the man advantage this period. Penticton with a 5-1 lead after 40 minutes of play. An early goal inside the first minute basically put this game away. Both teams switched powerplays on and off as most of the period was specialty teams with no team capitalizing. Both teams penalty kill were good. Penticton outshot Vernon 11-9.

3rd Period: Just inside the opening minute, Hunter Zandee with a rocket shot from the circle beat Zach Driscoll cutting the Penticton lead to 5-2 at 0:59 Riley Brandt with the lone assist. But just four minutes later Dante Fabbro's point shot was tipped on the way to the net, by captain Tyson Jost giving Penticton a 6-2 lead at 4:51 Fabbro and Easton Brodzinski with the assists. Former Vipers forward Demico Hannoun with a quick shot from inside the blueline forced Andrew Shortridge into making a quick glove save. Minutes later Shortridge come up with a second glove save this time off former Vipers forward Luke Voltin. Not a lot of action in the final frame, with the score out of reach it was more like a pond hockey game. The Vees looked to sit back a bit and the Vipers just didn't have much energy left in the tank to try and really get much of anything going. A lot of play going back and fourth with no real good chances in a pretty boring 3rd period. Around the halfway mark a handful of players crashed the crease, falling onto Zach Driscoll who was slow to get up, looked to be in some discomfort, stayed in the game. The Vees would come out of the play with a powerplay but unable to find the back of the net. Just after the penalty expired, Vernon would get their final powerplay of the night, but again struggled, as the Vees would kill off the minor. Just past the halfway mark Andrew Shortridge made a big save, on a wrap around was a little slow to get up, looked in some discomfort was seen bending over as the play went up ice, but would stay in the game. Shortridge saw a flurry of chances had to come up with some big saves to keep this game-score as close as possible. The Vipers looking to maybe set the tone for Game 5 come out hitting in the final minutes, laid out some big checks. In the dying seconds Viper captain Colton McCarthy looked to hold the puck along the side wall, tried bending over to pick up the game puck just seconds before the buzzer before several Vees players jumped in, causing a minor scrum before everyone was involved. Lots of pushing and shoving, with two players taking punches at each other, while the referee and linesmen tried breaking up the melay at the buzzer. Both teams would be separated, as both teams exchanged words with each other as the Vees bench poured onto the ice to congratulate the rest of their team mates, as Penticton would take Game 4 6-2 and take a commanding 3-1 series lead with Game 5 Friday in Penticton. Luke Voltin was able to grab the game puck from one of the linesmen after both teams were heading off the ice. Both teams exchanged goals early, in a very lack luster-boring 3rd period. Both teams looked to just want to end the game and go home, with not a lot of flow or play going on, looked more like a pond hockey game. Penticton had the better of the scoring chances, could have easily rung up the score if Andrew Shortridge wasn't forced into making a few big saves. Penticton outshot Vernon 18-8.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

The line of Brett Stapley, Steven Jandric & Nic Rasovic played very well through out the game. These three were the only three that showed much of anything in the loss. I thought Stapley had a few good shifts in the 2nd period, had atleast two or three good opportunities tonight. Jandric who played very well-looked good in the victory Tuesday didn't quit, played hard, was battling through out the game. Rasovic who has been one of the Vipers more consistant physical players this series, was another forward who worked-battled hard through out the game.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

Where was the same Vipers team that gutted out one of their best games-performances of the season in Game 3's 2-1 victory? This was not the same Vernon Vipers team I saw play last night. Vernon didn't come out with much jump-energy tonight, looked a little flat at times, didn't show any signs of emotion or intensity, just weren't clicking, especially with their passing. The Vipers had troubles breaking out of their own end, getting through the neutral zone, turned over the puck way too many times and it cost them two goals in that 1st period. The Vipers couldn't get anything going in that 1st period, had just two shots on goal, were holding onto the puck for too long, instead of shooting-getting pucks to the net. I don't think Vernon played all that bad in the 1st but two bad turnovers-giveaways and the Vipers are down 3-0. If Vipers don't turnover the puck, its only 1-0 after the 1st and a totally different game. Sure the Vipers made some mistakes-turnovers, didn't get many shots on goal, were still in this hockey game at one point in that 1st until giving up the two breakaway goals.   After going down 3-0 the Vipers confidence-body language was shot, this game was finished-all over at this point. The Vipers struggled offensively to get pucks to the net-shots on goal. Vernon with just a very few quality scoring chances, were out chanced all night. As the game went on, things seemed to get bad to worse as the Vees score early to start the 2nd then get a lucky break-bounce, jump out to a 5-1 lead not even halfway through this game. Vernon couldn't respond and didn't know what to do. The Vipers went 0-4 with the powerplay, in the 2nd period alone went 0-7 overall, had all kinds of troubles with the man advantage, were again holding onto the puck way too long, instead of getting pucks to the net-looking for rebounds, giving up two almost three shorthanded goals in one game, is going to kill you! I thought Vernon's penalty kill was pretty good. Graham Turnbull mentioned in the post-game show on air, that Joe Sacco left the game and didn't return. I didn't notice Sacco was even missing. What was Odeen Tufto doing on the point while on the PP? The Vipers leading scorer on the blueline? Shouldn't he be down low, in and around the net, where he scores most of his goals? I didn't think this was a good move-right decision. Your taking away one of if not your most offensive player and limiting his game playing on the point. Overall the Vipers looked pretty bad-dismal, Ive said it all season, this team has been very inconsistant  all year and it showed again tonight. Vernon has had troubles playing a full or close to sixty minutes as well as had troubles shooting the puck-getting pucks on net. All season the Vipers want to hold onto that puck, try and make that pretty play, instead of just shooting the puck, going to the net for a rebound. The Vipers passing has also struggled all season and hasn't improved much from start to finish. The Vipers have a huge road ahead of them, have their backs against the wall, must win the remainder of the series to take the series and it starts with Game 5 in Penticton Friday. The Vipers season is now on the line. Former Vipers assistant coach Eric Godard was at tonight's game as well as former Vipers Bryce Kakoske & Trevor Keenan. Former Vipers Head Coach-GM Troy Mick was also in attendance.

Top Player's: (Penticton)

Nick Jones (2 goals & 1 assist) Scores twice shorthanded to lead the way with three points. Jones who has played very well against Vernon this season, had a strong night tonight.

Easton Brodzinski (1 goal & 1 assist) Didn't stand out as much as in Game 3 but played well in the win tonight.

Dante Fabbro (2 assists) Had a strong night on the Penticton backend. Took a few big checks, didn't back down, played very well at both ends of the rink. A very smooth skater, moves the puck well, really sees-reads the play well.

Game Thought's: (Penticton)

After a tough 2-1 loss last night, the Vees responded with a huge statement game in Game 4 tonight. I don't think the Vees dominated the opening frame, were just strong on the forecheck-puck forced the Vipers into two turnovers, capitalized on two opportunities to grab a 3-0 lead. Once up by three Penticton knew this was their game, put the game away early in the 2nd and never looked back. Both teams didn't get a lot of great scoring chances, sure Penticton had more chances then the Vipers, but in the Vees case I think Penticton capitalized on their chances more then anything. What can you say about the Vees penalty kill, scoring twice shorthanded come very close to getting a third shorthanded goal were very dangerous on the PK. Penticton with a strong forecheck were looking for that dee to dee pass at the blueline all night, the Vees could see Vernon was having trouble clicking with their passing, & jumped on it. You cant play reckless with the puck or the Vees will make you pay everytime. Also give credit to Penticton's defence who once again had a solid night, has been very solid all series. The Vees defence really limited Vernon's opportunities, time and space, kept the Vipers to the outside, shut down the shooting lanes, didn't give the Vipers anything to shoot at. The Vees who normally don't take a lot of penalties, took lots tonight, something you don't normally see from a Fred Harbinson team. This was a big win, as Penticton grabs a 3-1 series lead, needs just one win to move on, has the Vipers on the ropes. The Vees are now 9-1 vs Vernon this year, including the regular season. A great turnout for Vees fans at the game, who made a lot of noise-cheered their team on strong through out the night.

Vees have Vipers on ropes

by Roger Knox - Vernon Morning Star

Mar 10, 2016

Scott Conway made good on his word, with help from his Penticton Vees teammates.

The Penticton native said after a Game 3, 2-1 loss Tuesday to the Vernon Vipers, in their B.C. Hockey League best-of-seven Interior Conference semifinal, that the Vees would show, in Game 4 Wednesday, why they were the best team in the league.

Conway opened the scoring 10 minutes into Game 4, Nicholas Jones added two shorthanded goals and the Vees held the Vipers to only 19 shots on goal in cruising to a 6-2 win at Kal Tire Place and a commanding three games to one series lead.

Game 5 is Friday night at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

“I think tonight was a great push-back game,” said Jones, the game’s first star. “Every time we’ve had a loss this year we’ve rebounded well and tonight was a good effort.”

After former Vipers forward Damico Hannoun took an interference penalty at 12:12 of the first period, Jones scored his first shorthanded marker 16 seconds later to make it 2-0 Penticton. Owen Sillinger scored just as Hannoun’s penalty expired for a 3-0 Vees lead.

Penticton, outshot 15-9 by the Vipers in the first period Tuesday, held the home side to just a single shot on goal in the opening 20 minutes while firing 13 shots at Vernon goalie Andrew Shortridge.

“We just came out hard,” said Jones. “We got some breaks and a couple of lucky bounces that we were able to capitalize on.”

Easton Brodzinski made it 4-0 Vees 54 seconds into the middle frame before Steven Jandric beat Zach Driscoll at 4:12 to give the Vipers a ray of hope.

That ray was dimmed nearly three minutes later as Jones scored his second shorthanded marker. Jones was the recipient of a bounce off the ends boards on a Penticton dump-in. Shortridge came out of the net to play the puck which hit something along the boards and went straight out to Jones who put the puck in the gaping cage before Shortridge could get back.

Hunter Zandee beat Driscoll with a shot from the slot 59 seconds into the third period for the Vipers before Tyson Jost finished the scoring on a neat deflection at 4:51.

Driscoll, who started Game 2 of the series, had to make only 17 saves as the Vees outshot Vernon 42-19.

“It wasn’t our best effort,” said Zandee. “We got away from the little things. We were turning over the pucks, which was the main problem, made too many mistakes and it cost us.”

Penticton goalie Anthony Brodeur, who looked to have suffered a lower body injury late in Game 3, did not dress for the Vees. He’s listed as day-to-day. Nolan Hildebrand was called up to backup Driscoll.

Shortridge was superb in the Vipers’ Game 3 victory, being named first star on the basis of a 43-save performance, including stopping all 26 shots he faced in the middle frame.

Odeen Tufto opened the scoring on a breakaway midway through the second period when he snuck behind the Vees defence and beat Brodeur low stick-side.

Conway equalized 44 seconds into the third, setting the stage for Jagger Williamson’s game-winner at 12:03 on a backhand past Brodeur.

The win snapped a 10-game Vipers losing streak against the Vees dating back to last year’s Interior Conference final, when Penticton won Games 6 and 7, then swept the six regular season games this year, and won the first two games of the series.

Vees forward Luke Voltin, who was with the Vipers in last year’s seven-game Interior Conference final loss, said the team kept things simple Wednesday.

“The message was we had to play 60 minutes, put the puck in the net and bang some bodies,” said Voltin. “There was nothing new. We knew we had to play harder. There was no panic.”

If the Vipers force a sixth game, it would be played in Vernon Saturday.

I was at tonight's Game 5 of the Interior Division Semi-Finals as Penticton defeated Vernon 5-0 in front of 2,993 fans at the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Starting Goaltenders:

Vernon: Andrew Shortridge
Penticton: Zach Driscoll

1st Period: Just seventeen seconds into the opening frame Penticton would jump on an early powerplay. Just 1:01 into the man advantage, Andrew Shortridge stopped Easton Brodzinski before Nick Jones buried the rebound giving Penticton a 1-0 lead at 1:16 Brodzinski and Dante Fabbro picked up the assists. The Vees with a strong start, looked hungry early, had an early jump on Vernon early. The Vipers after giving up the early PP goal were having all kinds of trouble coming out of their own end & breaking through the neutral zone. The Vipers needed three and a half minutes to record their first shot, wich was a high shot from Nic Rasovic from the top of the circle, Rasovic's shot looked to handcuff Zach Driscoll who had troubles catching the puck with his glove hand, allowed a rebound out front where a Vees defender would clear the puck from harms way. About a minute later Jimmy Lambert was sent in for the breakaway with a Vees defenceman chasing him down, Lambert tried going fivehole on Driscoll who smothered the puck on a nice save. About a minute later the Vees come back the other way on a two on one. Chris Gerrie and Mitch Brooks lead the rush, while Gerrie kept and fired was denied by Andrew Shortridge who made a nice pad save. The Vipers would get called for too many men just before the midway mark, sending Penticton to their second powerplay of the night. Easton Brodzinski with a heavy shot from the slot couldn't beat Shortridge. The Vees with some decent pressure, moved the puck around but didn't really generate much for offensive chances as Vernon with a good penalty kill, would kill off the minor. The Vees had the early edge in play were outshooting the Vipers 9-3 at the halfway mark. Vernon would their first look with the man advantage, that didn't even last a full minute before the Vipers taking an undisciplined penalty to even up the play. While four on four Penticton would send another player to the box, giving the Vipers a shortened powerplay. Bo Pellah setup Brett Stapley who was stopped by the quick glove of Zach Driscoll. The powerplay would come to an end before Vernon would get their first full look with the man advantage just two minutes later. Some good puck movement from the Vipers allowed Jimmy Lambert a great opportunity in front was stoned by Driscoll who then stopped Bo Pellah before robbing former Penticton Vees forward Liam Finlay at the side of the net, the Vipers with three great quality chances couldn't solve Zach Driscoll as Penticton got some big saves from their goaltender, would kill off the penalty. It was all Vipers in the second half, who finally seemed to get their legs going and get some opportunities and pucks to the net. The Vees with just two shots in the second half of the frame. With 1:54 remaining Nic Rasovic won a faceoff deep in the Penticton zone, allowed Steven Jandric to rip a quick shot from the circle just went high and over the far corner on a missed opportunity. Penticton was up 1-0 after 20 minutes. Just like in Game 2 the Vees capitalized on an early powerplay at the start of the game, to jump out to a 1-0 lead less then two minutes into the contest. Penticton looked good early, carried the play before the Vipers would get two good chances had troubles getting through the neutral zone in the first ten minutes. In the second half Vernon seemed to get their game going, were skating, moving the puck well, finally get shots on goal, come up with some good opportunities couldn't solve Zach Driscoll. The Vees were the better team in the first half, while the Vipers were the better team in the second half. Shots were even 11-11.

2nd Period: Just fifty eight seconds into the middle frame the Vees would strike early. Penticton took a big check along the side wall, wich opened the ice for Mitch Brooks who was untouched ripped a rocket of a shot from the top of the circle, beat Vipers starting goaltender Andrew Shortridge high glove side, gave Penticton a early 2-0 lead at 0:58 Owen Sillinger and Scott Conway collected the helpers. The Vees looked to be on a mission, looked hungry really stepped up their play and fully took over this hockey game in the 2nd period. Penticton jumped on Vernon early and often, had the Vipers running around in circles in their own end. It looked like the Vees were on the man advantage, forced the Vipers into several turnovers as the Vipers had all kinds of trouble clearing the zone. Penticton with a ton of pressure, were moving the puck around, had some good looks at the net come close to scoring on atleast three or four plays, just missing the net. After failing to clear the zone atleast four or five times the Vees would capitalize. Easton Brodzinski with a seeing eye shot from the high slot, beat a screened Andrew Shortridge who never saw the shot-puck somehow found its way through a maze of players in front, into the back of the net, gave Penticton a 3-0 lead at 3:26 Scott Conway & Tyson Jost with the assists. Shortly after Vernon lost their focus and started to unravel taking the first of several undisciplined penalties. Andrew Shortridge for roughing would cost his team another goal. Vees captain Tyson Jost gave Penticton a 4-0 lead at 6:07 Dante Fabbro with the lone helper. A minute later the Vees headed back to the PP for back to back powerplays. Once again the Vees moving the puck around, had several good looks at the net, just missed the net or had the puck hit someone in front on some close calls. Easton Brodzinski with a quick shot from the circle couldn't beat Shortridge who was forced into making several stops while on the PK. The Vees lethal powerplay wouldn't be stopped, after Scott Conway's shot hit Easton Brodzinski in the face or head as the puck went into the back of the net off Brodzinski giving Penticton a 5-0 lead at 8:59 Conway & Dixon Bowen picked up the assists. Less then a minute later the Viper parade to the penalty box wasn't over, after Vernon would lose Jimmy Lambert for the remainder of the period after a check to the head penalty, wich also includes a ten minute misconduct. Lambert would head to the Viper dressing room but return for the 3rd period. The Vees again with some good pressure, had some good chances this time couldn't capitalize as Vernon would kill off the minor. It was all Penticton in the first half as the Vees spent most of the first ten minutes on the powerplay, opened up the scoring with four goals. The Vipers needed eleven minutes to record their first shot of the period, played most of that first half in their own end. In the second half the Vipers would jump on the man advantage but it was Scott Conway with a solid penalty kill, forced the Vipers into turning over the puck in front of the net, before getting a great chance in front couldn't beat Andrew Shortridge who had to be alert to stop Conway in tight. The Vipers struggled with the PP as Penticton was able to kill off the minor. Late in the frame Nick Jones took a flying run-check at Bo Pellah along the side wall, before Pellah turned around cross checking Jones from behind, then giving Jones a shot to the face as he was getting up. Pellah would get two minors for his dump play, sending the Vees on their fourth powerplay of the 2nd period. The Vees would run out of time as the buzzer sounded to end the period. Penticton was up 5-0 after 40 minutes. It was all Vees who come out hard, scored in the opening minute totally dominated the 2nd period. Penticton with four powerplay's capitalized twice scored four goals to basically put this game away. Vernon didn't get off to the start they wanted, gave up the early goal before getting frustrated, taking some very undisciplined penalties wich cost them the game. The Vees carried and dominated the play, looked like men against the boys as most of the period was played in the Vernon end. The Vees with tons of pressure, had several good quality chances were buzzing in and around the net. The Vipers with several defensive turnovers had all kinds of trouble with the Penticton offence. You had to feel for Andrew Shortridge who was under siege and under attack all night, didn't get a lot of help from his defenceman. Penticton outshot Vernon 12-6.

3rd Period: The Vees started the final period on the man advantage that was carried over from the end of the 2nd period. Penticton with some good pressure, didn't really get any great chances couldn't capitalize as the Vipers killed off the minor. The Vees looked to take their foot off the gas, as the Vipers carried a lot of the play but didn't really generate much for offence. Vernon would get a powerplay just before the halfway mark but unable to breat Vees starting goaltender Zach Driscoll's shutout bid. Down 5-0 with their season on the line, the Vipers still showed signs of hustle and hard work as Vernon battled even with the game out of reach. Not a lot of action or any real great quality chances in the first half from either team. In the second half the Vipers had some good looks but couldn't beat Driscoll. With just under five minutes to go in the Vipers season, Callum Volpe with a quick low shot forced Zach Driscoll to kick out the point shot, while on the following rush back up ice, Mitch Brooks with a nice move inside the Viper blueline, ripped a quick shot was denied by Andrew Shortridge. A minute or so later Riley Brandt was stopped by Zach Driscoll who couldn't handle the rebound, before Viper captain Colton McCarthy jumped on the second and third opportunity couldn't find the back of the net after back to back chances from in close. With about two minutes left in the game and the series, the fans at the SOEC started to make some noise, as you heard the cow bells and fans starting to cheer on their Vees. With about a minute and a half remaining Jagger Williamson with a wicked shot from the slot was stopped by Driscoll who come up with a tough save. With a minute to go the crowd at the South Okanagan Events Centre started to rise, getting on their feet making noise, cheering on the Vees. In the dying seconds you could see a few Vipers with their heads between their legs on the bench being consoled by other team mates. At the buzzer the Vees poured onto the ice to celebrate the win and series while the Vipers were very slow to leave the bench, while several players were down on on knee, shedding some tears with their season and some guys careers all but over. Penticton would win 5-0 taking the Interior Division Semi-Finals 4-1 will now advance to face either the Salmon Arm Silverbacks or West Kelowna Warriors. Both teams would line up at centre ice for the hand shake, Fred Harbinson would take a few moments to chat with Mac Ferner, Odeen Tufto and Mark Ferner before both teams made their way off the ice. With the score-game out of reach, it looked like Penticton took their foot off the gas, while Vernon still played-battled hard knowing what was ahead. The Vipers carried a lot of the play, didn't get a lot of great chances, had some of their better opportunities in the final few minutes. Shots were even 9-9.

Top Player's: (Vernon)

Bo Pellah I thought played very well on the Vipers blueline. Lead the team in scoring during the playoffs with five points played some of his best hockey of the season, in this series. Was moving the puck up ice a lot, saw a lot of ice time through out the game.

Nic Rasovic I thought battled hard in this series and had a fairly good game tonight.

Game Thought's: (Vernon)

The Vipers didn't get off to the start they wanted, giving up an early powerplay goal 1:16 into the start of Game 5. Vernon was outplayed and had troubles getting out of their own end and through the neutral zone early but seemed to get their game going in the second half. Had some good chances, couldn't solve Zach Driscoll. The Vipers played much better in the second half were down just a goal, fell apart in the 2nd period giving up four goals (2 powerplay goals) were down 5-0 going into the 3rd. The 2nd period cost Vernon the game, The Vipers looked very frustrated at times, got into penalty trouble, took some very undisciplined penalties wich cost them the game. Vernon needed eleven minutes to get their first shot on goal in that 2nd period, were totally outplayed. It was like watching men play against boys. The Vipers were badly outmatched and outworked in that middle frame, couldn't recover. So for a second time in two years the Vipers season comes to an end in Penticton. The Vipers struggled vs Penticton all season, going 0-6 and now finish the season 1-10 vs the Vees. The Vipers last win in Penticton was Game 5 in last years playoff matchup with the Vees. This team struggled all season, just to make the playoffs had to win the final regular season game In Trail didn't have much of a chance vs the high powered Penticton Vees. I thought the Vipers would be lucky to win a game if one in this series and they did that with a 2-1 victory in Game 3. Its been a very frustrating and disappointing season from a fans point of view, this team struggled all season, had their ups and downs but mostly downs. It seemed like this team just couldn't gel for whatever reason, didn't have that team chemistry Viper fans are use to watching with past teams. The Vipers lacked size, experience, veteran leadership, defence and scoring. This years Vipers were just too small, they were either pushed-knocked around, had troubles moving bodies from the front of the net or getting to the front of the net, their defence struggled, having all kinds of problems through out the season and the team lacked scoring and it showed tonight. Other then Odeen Tufto and Liam Finlay this team were all average hockey players. This team was also very inconsistent all year, had troubles beating the top teams and even teams below them in the standings. Now goaltending was a different story. What can you say about Andrew Shortridge? With the veteran 20 yr old between the pipes, I don't think this team would have made the playoffs. Shortridge was the Vipers MVP and kept them in a lot of games through out the season, in games they won it was basically because of him. I sure hope the Vipers-scouts-coaches take a real good look at next years returning players-new recruits and get the Vipers back to where they once were. Other then last season the past six years have been pretty dismal, something Viper fans-die hard fans like myself aren't use too watching. To all the players that wont be back next season, I wish you all but nothing but succsess in your future whatever you do, and to the returning players, I look forward to next season.Thank you! The Vipers have a possible fourteen players returning for next season (Mitchell Oliver, Brett Stapley, Charley Michalowski, Colton McCarthy, Jagger Williamson, Riley Brandt, Christian Cakebread, Nic Rasovic, Hunter Zandee, Jimmy Lambert, Callum Volpe, Darren Rizzolo, Steven Jandric & Brendan Barry). A very small amount of Viper fans at tonight's game, I counted six. Former Vipers defenceman-captain Lennie Rampone was at tonight's game.

Top Player's: (Penticton)

Nick Jones (1 goal) Opened the scoring, had another good game in this series.

Scott Conway (3 assists) Has had an excellent season and so far great playoff run! Conway had 27 points in eleven games vs the Vipers this season. Conway was a Viper killer! This kid is fun to watch, always seems to find open ice, really sees-reads the play well, always keeps his feet moving, seems to always be in the right place at the right time. Is very hard to contain and defend against.

Mitch Brooks (1 goal) Seemed to get better as the series went along, I thought he played very well in the win tonight. Was involved in the play, played physical, didn't back down from the physical play, was going to the net, worked-battled hard all evening.

Easton Brodzinski (2 goals & 1 assist) Is another player who seems to play well against Vernon this year. I thought was very strong tonight and through out the series, strong on the puck, strong on the forecheck, wins a lot of battles, goes to the net, has a quick release, gets pucks to the net, hard to contain and defend against.

Zach Driscoll (26 saves-shutout) Didn't see much rubber-action but made the saves when needed. Come up with his biggest saves of the night in the 1st on the penalty kill, made three huge stops in a row off Liam Finlay, Bo Pellah & Jimmy Lambert. Finished the season 4-0 vs Vernon with three shutouts.

Dante Fabbro (2 assists) Is another Penticton Vee that has played well against the Vipers the past two seasons and again tonight. A very smooth skater, moves the puck well, sees-reads the play well, jumps into the play, gets pucks to the net, hard to beat one on one.

Chris Gerrie I thought played very well in the win tonight, had some looks-opportunities through out the game.

Game Thought's: (Penticton)

The league leading and defending Western Canada Cup Champion Penticton Vees move onto the Interior Division Finals for a fifth straight season. The Vees basically ran away with the Division & League early were no match for the Vipers this series and the regular season. Tonight the Vees with a big early powerplay goal, opened the scoring, got the huge crowd into the game early, put the Vipers back on their heels early before taking over the game in the 2nd period. This team is very skilled, has a ton of offense and can score at will and they showed it in that 2nd period. Penticton totally dominated and put the game away with four 2nd period goals. The Vees have lost just once at home all season, have only lost 17 home playoff games since the SOEC first opened. The Vees powerplay was very good, the Vees overall were very good, especially in that second frame, there relentless forecheck and work ethic is amazing, the Vees were winning most of the battles, races for the pucks, causing turnovers, forcing turnovers, giving the Viper defence all kinds of trouble. This team is built for a long playoff run, whos going to stop them?  A great lively crowd tonight made for a great atmosphere. Very close to 3000 people turned out with the 50-50 going for over $4000.  Id like to congratulate the Penticton Vees and their entire organization on a great season and series and wish them all the best in the next round.
